MICHAEL C. METZGER
Michael has been leading tours in Salem Massachusetts since early 2001. He has been conducting the Hocus Pocus Evening Walking tour since he spearheaded the writing of its original version in 2003. His unique idea during the creation process, no tour script. By not scripting the guide, each and every tour has the potential to be different and to cater to a groups particular interests. Since its creation in 2003 the tour has undergone several major revisions under his supervision, and is currently in its fourth version. He was also a major contributor to the development in 2002, of a tour of Salem's waterfront district. Michael is currently attending The University of Massachusetts at Boston, and is working towards a B.A. in History, as well as a minor in Political Science. He is a member of the University Honors Program and is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, a National Honor Society. Michael's areas of expertise include 17th century colonial religion, as well as English Industrialization. He particularly enjoys Cotton Mather and his unexplored connection to the Salem Witchcraft hysteria. One of his biggest passions, is this Educational Center. He feels that all of Salem's history should be explored. He firmly believes that the role of the Salem Historian, is not merely to write about styles of 18th century chairs, or inform people of who lived in Salem's stately houses. Rather the historian's role should be much grander, as they have the awesome responsibility of opening doors to the past. Providing a tour and Educational Center which does that, hopefully allows visitors and readers to create new personal explorations of the past, the results and lessons of which, can so often be used in our present day.
